#049: Dave Kusek – Getting an Education Online

Dave Kusek is a musician who has been inventing the future of music for the past twenty-five years. He was one of the first to capitalize on the commercial potential of computers and music. As an early synthesizer and electronic music pioneer, Dave cut his teeth on innovation.  Today, Dave Kusek is innovating at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., the premier school for aspiring professional musicians for over half a century. Dave runs Berklee Press, as well as leads Berklee’s major initiative to expand music education worldwide, through an online music school at Berkleemusic.com. An associate professor of music business at Berklee, Kusek also finds time to run Digital Cowboys, his consulting firm.

Sadly, I honestly didn’t think too much of this episode.

There was nothing wrong with the subject nor the presentation. It’s just my own experience with Berklee people(grads mostly) is they think they know a heck of a lot and actually know nothing at all of value. Not all of them mind you but many.

It’s much the same in my day job, I’ve been a computer/network/printer/software engineer/tech for nearly 2.5 decades now and EVERY so-called educated person I’ve ever encountered, has no clue about the real world. There is no replacement for learning a craft by doing it.

Still, I have to say, I have purchased books published by Berklee Press and found them useful, wrong quite often but useful none-the-less.

I have been an online student at Berklee for a little over a year now. I am enrolled in the Master Certificate program for music production and technology. My whole experience with the Berklee online program has been top notch. The great thing about the online program is it allows someone like myself (father of two with a full-time day job) to get an education from a great school. It has been a dream of mine for a long time to be able to make a living being involved in music and Berklee is giving me the education and tools that I need to realize that dream. I am eternally grateful!
