#200: Before you release your next single, listen to this episode!

Releasing singles is arguably more important for artists today than any time since the 1960s. But is there a RIGHT way to release a single?  In this episode, Chris and Kevin talk about five key strategic concepts you should apply to the launch of any single. Plus, some great listener calls.

The Music Ally article mentioned about Spotify is HERE.

Hey guys! This is my first comment ever here. You both have been a part of my days for the last month. I’m almost always listening through the episodes when making dinner. I haven’t found any music podcast online that is as good as yours. Thank you both a lot for doing this! Sincerely!

I wanted to ask you Kevin where I can find the last song playing on this podcast as you both are done talking? I assume you’ve made it, I love the song. I might steal the chord progression if you don’t mind? 😉

    Best regards,
    Max of Sweden

Chris mentions Spotify pre-saves a lot but I can’t get the Spotify URI from CD baby before the actual release date. I wanted to do a Spotify pre-save on my last release with a Show.co campaign, but I couldn’t get the Spotify URI before the release date. Chris, how are you doing these Spotify pre-saves? Am I not cool enough to get the URI’s before the actual release date? : ( : ( I feel so left out. Or is there some trickery involved?

You are welcome! Maybe one day we can join you for dinner.

For sure, call me up whenever you’re in Scandinia! So where can I find and listen to your song?

I’ve been checking Smalltown Poets out for sure. I was thinking of the last instrumental track you’re playing in this very episode? It’s a great song! Where can I listen to it?

Hey Kevin, on a recent episode of the NYT Popcast, they had a discussion about U2. Jon Caramanica mentioned in the next episode that he’d gotten a lot e-mails from people regarding their discussion including “former Christian band members”. Was that you?

  • kbreuner

Wasn’t me. Sounds interesting though. I’ll have to check it out.

Max – Thanks! All the music in the podcast (outside of the opening theme) is just instrumental music I’ve written. I’ve thought about pulling it all together and releasing it on Spotify.

  • Max Gunhamn

You should! I’m sure a lot of other podcast listeners would like that too.
All the best Kevin! I enjoy the podcast really much

Are there any episodes of the podcast that talk about releasing several singles prior to a full-length album, and making the singles available when someone pre-orders the album?

  • kbreuner

That is the exact topic of the live podcast taping Chris and I will be doing at this year’s DIY Musician Conference. It will be more fun in person, but if you can’t make it to the conference, we’ll release it down the podcast feed.
