#137: Shanta Thake – Getting the Attention of a Club Booker

Shanta Thake books artists and bands at Joe’s Pub at the Public, one of New York City’s most celebrated venues for emerging and established performance artists. (They book an astonishing 800 shows a year).  Named for Public Theater founder Joe Papp, Joe’s Pub debuted in 1998 and plays a vital role in supporting young artists while providing established artists with an intimate space to perform and develop new work. If you’re an artist trying to get the attention of club bookers, or book a tour, don’t miss this episode!

Seriously? 800 shows a year? Please, a venue that books that many shows is about as useful as a fifth wheel. Intimate? Not with 800 shows a year… And what’s with a west coast woman booking for east coast venues? Not that she can’t do it but seriously???
The Beatles never performed in New York before and sold out every appearance. This woman is ignorant to be kind. Good advice about learning about the appropriate space but, also terribly self serving. The story, the story, THE STORY! For Gods sake, Story? Get over the marketing bull. Story means NOTHING. Only the music matters. Good or bad, if it strikes a chord with the audience, it’s good. If it does not, it isn’t. Story only matters AFTER the music is perceived as good or great… No-one cares about an artist they don’t like. Guns And Roses were rude. This woman knows NOTHING. “Be Kind, be grateful”? Really? Without the artists, your venue does not exist.

I think you’re confused. Have you ever actually BEEN to Joe’s Pub? It is indeed an intimate venue – it’s one of the best laid-out small rooms in the city. Remember, nobody in the audience cares how many shows they book a year – they just care about the show they’re seeing that particular evening. And what’s your beef with with Ms. Thake being from the West Coast? Tupac and Biggie are dead, kid – let it go. Meanwhile, if you listened to the podcast, she’s worked at the venue for 12 years and lived in the city even longer – if that doesn’t make her a New Yorker, what does? Where are YOU from, anyway? Finally, do you always ignore the advice of people who actually know what they’re talking about and substitute your own unfounded opinions instead? Seriously, dude, give me ONE reason an artist should take your dumbass opinion over Ms. Thake’s experience-based advice? Stupid troll.

  • Robert Lee King

She IS NOT an artist. She is a booker. There’s your one reason.

  • Tom Pryor

That’s a pretty stupid reason, then. Do you read much? The title of this podcast is “Getting The Attention of a Club Booker” not “Getting The Attention of Other Artists” – see how that works? Stop being a troll.

  • Chance-Erica Williams

Am I wrong to take away from this that your best way to get the attention of a booker is to know someone they’ve already booked? And also to be polite of course. I hate whiny assholes too Shanta. 🙂 That’s what it kind of sounded like. Not that that’s a bad thing

  • Chance-Erica Williams

Lol! Every time I see a Beatles comparison I want to be like, “Dude, it’s 2014”.

  • Robert Lee King

Then clearly, you’ve never been in a situation where you need a booker or have been a booker. I have been on both sides. A bookers job, is to make money for the venue at the lowest possible outlay. An artist trying to get through a booker has to make the booker believe that whatever their fee, the venue will earn out much more than the venue pays out for the artist. The only troll here is you.

  • Robert Lee King

If you think that way, then true artists mean nothing to you. The year is meaningless. Beatles, Beethoven, Bach, Brahms, Chopin, Black Sabbath or Tool… Quality matters. Thinking it’s X year only shows you’re not thinking about longevity. Those names come up often because, those artists, shaped music. Most modern as in today, “artists” only clone whatever might be popular at the moment.

  • Tom Pryor

Nice try, troll, but here in the real world there’s nothing mutually exclusive about caring about quality AND keeping current. That’s just a BS false dichotomy that angry, out-of-touch trolls like you like to put out there in an attempt to shut other people up.

Sounds to me like you need to update your references. Tool? Seriously? ROFL
